When replacement makes sense

Sizing matters

Bigger isn't better. An oversized AC cools the air quickly and then shuts off before it removes humidity, which leaves the house cool but clammy. An undersized one runs nonstop on the hottest days. A proper load calculation looks at square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure and ductwork.

Efficiency and newer refrigerants

Since January 2023, new central air conditioners are rated under the SEER2 standard, and the southern U.S. has a higher minimum efficiency for new systems than the north. Since 2025, new residential systems are moving to lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. We'll explain what applies to the equipment you're considering.

What an installation includes

A typical replacement covers removing the old equipment, setting the new outdoor and indoor units, connecting the refrigerant lines, electrical and condensate drain, and starting up and testing the system.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an AC replacement take?

A straightforward replacement of an existing split system is often completed in a day. Changes to ductwork, electrical or equipment location can add time.

Should I replace the indoor and outdoor units together?

Usually, yes. Matched indoor and outdoor components are needed to reach the rated efficiency, and newer refrigerants generally aren't compatible with older coils.

Do you install heat pumps too?

Yes. See heat pump service and replacement.
